Print Design
Cookbook Layout
This project is from my Intro to Typography course, where I utilized the Adobe Creative Suite to create wordmarks and format & align type. Our final project was to create cookbook & website layouts for randomly assigned recipes.
Programs: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop
Completed 2021
“Using recipes, that includes step-by-step instructions, design two cookbook spread layouts for the recipes provided to you. The page size for this publication is 8” x 10”. The design must contain all copy provided; recipe titles, servings, ingredients, folios (page numbers), captions, footers, pantry staples, etc. You must also use the finished dish image in your final layout and may optionally choose to include the individual step images as well.”
My first step in the process was to visit a bookstore and find examples of cookbooks that stood out to me for their design & layout choices.
01. Project Brief & Inspiration
Once I decided on the aesthetic I wanted to achieve with my design, my next step was to create options for its formatting.
I created 6 different layout options based around the cookbook spreads I was using as my inspiration.
02. Layout Ideas
My next step was to create the first draft of my design using Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
The design went through a few different iterations based on feedback from my instructor and classmates, which resulted in some changes to my design & typesetting choices.
03. Digital Drafts
Iteration 1
Iteration 2
After making some final refinements, I completed both of my recipe spreads and created a mockup of what they would look like in a cookbook using Photoshop.
