Print Design

Artistic License Exhibition

This project was part of my Intro to Design course, where I learned to create vector graphics, print designs, and illustrations. Our final project was to create promotional materials for a mock MoMA exhibition that features a personal collection of ours. I chose to use my collection of photos of vanity license plates, which I had been collecting over the course of several years.

Programs: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign

Completed 2021

For my personal collection exhibition, I wanted to use something that I had been collecting for many years- photos of funny vanity license plates. I had accumulated many photos from both my own encounters and from my friends who would send me vanity plates they saw out in the wild.

I chose some of the best ones out of my collection of 60+ photos and used a plate generator website to create digital versions of the plates.

01. Starting Point

02. Choosing Fonts & Colors

Once I had decided on the subject of my mock exhibition, I chose a primary and secondary typeface for my marketing materials, as well as a palette of 6 colors to utilize in my designs.

I also picked a name for my exhibition- Artistic License- which was a nod to American drivers being given the artistic license to create a vanity plate, as well as the ‘license’ part of license plate.

03. Poster Design

The next part of this project was to create a poster advertising the exhibition.

I created a few sketches and digital rough drafts, and had chosen the third rough draft shown here to continue working on.

04. Brochure Design

While working on the poster design, we were also tasked with designing a brochure that would be handed out at the mock exhibition.

This was my first iteration of the brochure design.

04. Final Designs

After receiving feedback from my class, I made some adjustments to my poster & brochure designs.

I changed some of the text formatting and design elements, and included the motif of a yellow rectangle striking through some text for emphasis, mimicking the yellow lines used on roadways.
